The most poetic thing about these tiles begins not with the eye, but with the ear.
白如玉,声如磬
Lifted from the white-hot kiln to cool, the tiles begin to sing — a delicate, crystalline ringing the ancient masters described as white as jade, sounding like a resonant chime.
That music is the glaze fracturing. As the tile cools, the glaze contracts faster than the clay beneath it and splinters into thousands of microscopic fissures, each voicing a tiny bell-like note while the tile itself remains whole — 碎而不裂, broken yet undivided.
What is left behind is the legendary ice-crackle glaze: a revival of Song dynasty Ru ware, of which fewer than a hundred genuine pieces survive anywhere in the world.
For centuries Western ceramics treated crazing as a flaw — a technical failure to be corrected. Nine hundred years ago, Eastern masters did something else with it. They read the tension in the glaze as a form of beauty, and learned to summon it deliberately.
In 2017 a small, unadorned Northern Song bowl sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong for HKD 294 million. It carried no gilding, no painted motif, no inlay. What it carried was a fine web of cracks running through a quiet, sky-blue glaze.

Cobalt balanced by interlocking copper and iron ions. Fired at 1280°C, where its danger is bleeding — cobalt melts fast, and a fraction too much heat blurs the crisp lines of the crazed surface.

Early-summer rain falling through ripening plum groves. Deep, soft and full-bodied, with the tactile calm of river jade.
Ferrous iron in a thick glaze applied three or four times over. Fired at 1280°C under heavy reduction and cooled slowly on purpose, trapping microscopic bubbles that scatter light from within.
The holy grail — Huizong's rain-cleared sky. Neither quite blue, nor green, nor grey, and it shifts with the light of the room around it.
Iron oxide held between one and three percent with micro-ground agate. The colour is no pigment at all: cooling glaze separates into billions of nano-scale silica spheres that scatter blue light, exactly as the atmosphere does.

Trace iron, titanium and manganese in a neutral reduction atmosphere held on a knife's edge — pull too much oxygen and the iron turns blue; leak a little and the titanium turns yellow.
A white that feels warm rather than clinical — soft and faintly sweet, like fresh milk-jade.
A low-iron body and a clear, softly opacified glaze, fired to hold warmth without tipping into cream.
The quietest colour in the collection, and the one that changes most with the light it is given.
A trace-metal blush in a high-fired reduction glaze, where the palest tones are the hardest to hold steady across a firing.
A reactive glaze is not painted on. The artisan orchestrates a chemical dance between metal and atmosphere, then surrenders to the kiln.
In an oxygen-rich fire, copper blooms into living green. Starve that same copper of air and it transforms into a deep, dramatic red. Differences in kiln design, in fuel, and in exactly where a tile sits in the furnace produce 窑变 — yaobian, kiln transmutation: accidental, unrepeatable shifts of colour once believed to be acts of divine intervention.
No two firings are the same, so no two tiles are ever alike. Where industrial surfaces offer flawless repetition, this offers the opposite gift.
These are hand-cut, hand-glazed earthenware tiles. Variation in colour, edge and thickness is the material behaving as it should, not a fault — order from the same run, allow for movement in the setting out, and let the surface do what it was made to do.
