Sustainable Design in Action: Kaolin Surfacesand Green Star Across Australia

How Level A GreenRate certified porcelain helped deliver three benchmark sustainable projects in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

As many of you know, Kaolin Surfaces sits at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing, backed by the highest level of independent certification from Global GreenTag. With Level A GreenRate certification, our surfaces are a preferred choice for architects, specifiers, builders and developers who prioritise sustainability and environmental responsibility across their projects.

That certification carries real weight in the specification process. Global GreenTag GreenRate is a product rating system built to meet the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star ‘Sustainable Products’ credit requirements, and a Level A rating delivers the full credit points available under those tools. In practical terms, choosing Level A certified surfaces is a fast, transparent and cost-effective way for a project to earn points toward its Green Star rating — without compromising on design, performance or quality.

We’re proud to share three recent projects across Australia — in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth — where Kaolin Surfaces contributed to both exceptional design outcomes and meaningful sustainability achievements. Each one shows the value that independently certified, low-impact materials bring to modern developments, and how aesthetics, durability and environmental performance can work together rather than compete.

1. Antara Living by PTW Architects — Sydney

A 6-Star Green Star benchmark for high-rise residential living.

As one of Australia’s first high-rise residential developments to achieve a 6-Star Green Star rating — the level the Green Building Council of Australia recognises as ‘World Leadership’ — Antara Living represents a new benchmark for sustainable urban living. Designed by PTW Architects, the project demonstrates that density and sustainability can advance together.

Kaolin Surfaces is proud to have contributed with our Level A GreenRate certified porcelain surfaces, supporting the design and delivery team in creating spaces where design, performance and sustainability work as one. Because our porcelain is independently certified at the highest GreenRate level, it could be specified with confidence toward the project’s Sustainable
Products credits — helping the development reach its 6-Star ambition while giving residents durable, low-maintenance, beautifully finished surfaces.

2. Bennets Lane by FJC Architecture — Melbourne

Travertine-look porcelain with a P5 anti-slip rating, where design meets safety.

This beautiful development showcases our travertine-look porcelain tiles, manufactured with our P5 SilkGrip surface — delivering a high anti-slip rating while keeping a soft, refined feel underfoot. Designed by FJC Architecture, the scheme uses the tiles throughout the main lobbies and bathhouse, exactly the wet and high-traffic areas where slip resistance matters most.

The result brings together natural-stone aesthetics, technical performance and everyday practicality. A P5 slip rating is among the highest classifications available, giving specifiers a compliant, low-risk solution for communal wet areas — without resorting to the coarse, utilitarian finishes that slip resistance often forces. For architects, it’s a considered answer for spaces where design and safety have to work seamlessly together, and the porcelain’s low porosity and durability keep it looking refined with minimal upkeep over the life of the building.

3. Price Street by Breathe Architecture — Perth

A fossil fuel-free, renewable-powered apartment development.

Designed by Breathe Architecture, Price Street sets a new benchmark for sustainable apartment living, combining sophisticated design with a strong commitment to environmental performance. As a fully fossil fuel-free development powered by Australian renewable energy, the project reflects a holistic approach to sustainability — one that extends from how the building is powered all the way down to the materials specified inside it.

With sustainability at the forefront of the specification process, Kaolin Surfaces was a natural choice for the tile supply. Selected by Breathe Architecture, our Global GreenTag Level A certified surfaces aligned seamlessly with the project’s ambitious environmental objectives while delivering a refined and enduring aesthetic. The independent certification gave the design team verified evidence of low environmental and material-health impact — the kind of transparency a genuinely fossil fuel-free project demands of every product it specifies.

Why certified surfaces matter to specifiers

Across Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, the common thread is independent certification. Green Star projects increasingly demand documented, third-party proof of a product’s sustainability credentials, and Global GreenTag GreenRate Level A certification provides exactly that — contributing the full available points under the Sustainable Products credit category. For architects and specifiers, that turns a sustainability ambition into a defensible, evidence-backed specification.

Kaolin Surfaces continues to invest in sustainable manufacturing so that choosing the responsible option never means choosing the lesser one. To request certification documentation, samples or specification support for your next Green Star project, get in touch with the Kaolin Surfaces team.
