What is the ideal size for tiles?

Porcelain tiles become larger every year. While 10 years ago 600*600mm tile would impress in size, nowadays it is not uncommon to see very large panels of up to 1.6m*3.6m. The most popular and common size in Asia is already 750*1500mm. It is understandable, large format tiles provide you with a more luxurious and impressive look compared to the smaller tiles. Certain looks, such as precious stone, can only achieve its full value and advantage in large formats, such as in the comparison on the left/right/ below.

At Kaolin, we offer quite a large range of sizes, from 600*600mm right up to what is currently the biggest tile in the world at 1.6*3.6m. However, we’ve found a wide range of benefits and advantages for the 750*1500mm and 900*1800mm size of tiles.

While those sizes allow us to showcase our precious stone, rare marbles looks and our pastels colour range Morandi, in a much more impressive way than the 600*1200mm and 600*300mm sizes, it still allows you to transport the tiles and install them quite easily compared to large slabs. Large slabs are hard to move into multi-storey residences, hard to transport to site, can be prone to breakage and if you cut one wrong, you will lose a lot of meterage.

The 750*1500mm and 900*1800mm tiles can still easily be transported by one or two people, easy to put up on the wall or floor without having specialized tool or four people on site, can be carried in the small bathrooms, residential lifts and be easily installed. It still allows you to create a very impressive bathroom, living room, feature wall while making installation a little bit easier for the tiler and the project in general.

Another major advantage with these two sizes is that the technology used to produce these sizes is well established and allows us to get the tightest tolerances on the market. We are the only company that can offer a seamless joint tiling, which is a 0.5mm grout joint. Our allowance for variation in size in these tiles is only 0.2mm or 0.02%, which is the strictest tolerance in the world. You can create a seamless look with these tiles, especially with our marble Endless Vein™ connection, where we can do hundreds of metres without visible grout joints and with an impressive endless connection between the tiles. This technology is not available in large slabs.
