The pale, luminous blue of Emperor Huizong's dream—"the colour of the sky through breaking clouds after rain." This is the holy grail of Chinese glazes, born of Ru ware so rare that fewer than a hundred pieces survive in all the world. To capture it, artisans ground precious agate into the glaze and fired it within an unforgiving high-reduction kiln, where a single degree of variance would turn the heavens to muddy green—a colour won only through relentless, patient failure.
