At Kaolin, we’ve always believed in the power of collaboration. But this initiative is unprecedented – the first of its kind in Australia, for the first time manufacturers are working in unison to create products that align seamlessly, transforming how design can be approached holistically. Tanya Buchanan Editor-in-chief of Belle Magazine explored how Kaolin, Taubmans and Blend Concrete Design have created a blueprint using Kaolin tiles as a foundation, the cohesive palette was illustrated by the innovative mind of Sam Alawie from Zane Carter Architects and the finishing touch by Daniela Tippett of Casabela’s Interiors.

A VISION FOR COLLABORATION
Anton, our Managing Director, welcomed guests with heartfelt words that set the tone for the evening. He expressed how meaningful it was to see this vision come to life, sharing gratitude for everyone who helped along the journey. His acknowledgement of Dani from Casabela Interiors and Sam Alawie from Zane Carter Architects underscored how crucial their input was in shaping The Design Collective.
The highlight of the night was a conversation between Tanya Buchanan and Sam Alawie. Tanya captured the spirit of the collaboration perfectly: “This has been an excellent collaboration that I think everyone can get on board with. There’s something to take away whether you’re an architect, designer, builder, stylist, or DIYer.”

A COHESIVE PALETTE THAT INSPIRES
Sam shared how using Kaolin’s tiles as a foundation created a cohesive palette which simplifies decision-making saving time for designers, architects and builders, allowing them to focus on what matters most: creating innovative, emotionally resonant spaces.
He explained how the palette functions as a “kit of parts,” flexible yet cohesive, offering endless possibilities. This approach not only enhances the creative process for architects but also provides practical solutions for builders and developers, enabling them to create spaces that are not just functional but also deeply emotive.

A highlight of Sam’s design is the use of our Calacatta Viola marble tile to create visual continuity, layering spaces with sophistication and intent. From the hallways dressed as “appetizers” to the bathrooms elevated as wellness sanctuaries, every element was carefully considered.
For architects, designers, builders, and DIY enthusiasts, the Design Collective offers a toolkit of cohesive palettes and customizable elements to simplify the creative process.
By involving all collaborators early, the initiative provides a luxury design experience while reducing complexities and costs.
As Australia spends more time at home, projects like this cater to the growing demand for thoughtful, cohesive spaces that combine function and emotion.

DESIGN THAT CONNECTS PHYSICALLY & EMOTIONALLY
The designs showcased during the evening revealed how design connects deeply with people. From biophilic design elements like planter boxes to the thoughtful use of materials such as Calacatta Viola marble, every detail had a purpose. As Sam noted, “Every home that is produced is for people. It’s got to be emotion-driven and give the occupants a good experience.”
Tanya added her perspective, highlighting the growing importance of wellness spaces like bathrooms and how trends like biophilic design are redefining the way we live.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE DESIGN COLLECTIVE?
The evening closed with a forward-looking discussion on how this collaboration could grow. Sam hinted at the potential for even more cross-pollination between brands, saying, “It’s really exciting to think about how new collaborators could produce something they’ve never created before.”
As we look to the future, we’re energized by the possibilities this initiative holds – not only for us at Kaolin but for the entire design community.
